Three underrated reasons to learn cooking

I was never big on cooking or learning how to cook until this golden realization hit me. Growing up, whenever I was at home after work or on weekends, I loved being in my own world watching movies. Also, my mother never forced me to get inside the kitchen if I didn’t want to. We’ve cooked a few dishes together occasionally for fun, but that’s about it!

After moving to Dubai, I thought I’d definitely need to learn to cook because regularly eating outside was neither healthy nor budget-friendly. By God’s grace or pity, I found a great cook. Touchwood, I still have him. And his haath ka khaana is GOALS!

Despite having lucked out at that, recently, out of nowhere, I had the urge to learn how to cook. Maybe it had something to do with being independent in all aspects. If you know how to cook, you are not dependent on anyone or any delivery app.

It’s such a liberating feeling to be able to make whatever you’re craving at anytime of the day.

Be it pasta or roti sabji or even something for your sweet tooth. Not to mention the rising prices of everything. And they are not even made using the best ingredients.

So the number one reason is...

You can survive almost anywhere!

Imagine the COVID era hitting again or something worse than that! Remember how we were all locked in our houses? If you have to cross that bridge, cross it with your culinary skills.

Also, if your cook is sick or if you are on your own or it's too late and the delivery guys aren't available at that hour, you should be able to help yourself. And I don't mean helping yourself with Maggi but with something more nutritious.

If your partner or parents cook for you regularly, know that they'd love to have their love reciprocated with a dish that you make for them.

And this skill also comes in handy when they are unwell. Basically, there are no cons at all to learning this skill.

And the second reason is...

You become 10 times more attractive than you actually are

Not just to others but to yourself as well!

I cooked baby corn a few days ago to eat with my dal, rice, and it was yum!

A bit of a rice flour would have made it crispy! But it was super tasty.

I am not big on cooking yet, but I can prepare food that can nourish my body and make my soul happy. I can make dal, rice, 3-4 veggies, 2-3 starters, and 2-3 breakfast items. I have to admit it's not at par to host anyone yet, but I am getting there. Remember, being able to cook healthy meals for yourself is the first step.

And the third reason is...

Cooking and growing your own veggies is the new need

Because of inflation, growing pests on veggies, and adulterated food practices in the system, it's best to grow your own food (however you can). I understand it's not possible to grow everything due to time, weather and space constraints. But we must try and start with whatever we can. I have curry leaves and green chili that grows well in the UAE weather. I am going to try growing tomatoes once the winter kicks in.

Do you agree with these reasons and are you growing anything in your balcony? I'd love to see those pictures or hear from you in the comments.

That's it for today. See you on another blog.
